Price is Too High with Enbridge Project

July 20 2009 | Media Releases | Office of the Wet'suwet'en (Globe and Mail)

Letter to the Editor – Globe and Mail

The Wet’suwet’en Nation in Northcentral British Columbia is also opposed to the Northern Gateway pipelines and other forms of malice Industrial Development in our territories (At what price ‘White Man’s Money’?, Saturday). We support the Manitoba chief Terrance Nelson’s position with his message to his constituents, which is more consistent with the 1997 Gisdaywa-Delgamuukw Supreme Court of Canada decision recognizing that Aboriginal Rights and Title need to be upheld.

In June, the Wet’suwet’en hosted an Energy Summit where representatives signed a moratorium against proposals from Enbridge and tar sands transportation through the region. We are all in favor of Economic Development but the type of business that Enbridge represents is a dangerous proposition. As stated by our hereditary chief Alphonse Gagnon, the tar sands affects us all – from Fort Chipewyan to Haida Gwaii and beyond. We can only protect our lands and waters if we stand together.
