Northgate, Matachewan First Nation reach deal

March 26 2008 | News Articles | The Canadian Press

MATACHEWAN–Northgate Minerals Corp. and the Matachewan First Nation have reached an agreement on the development of the company’s Young-Davidson project in Matachewan, Ont.

A memorandum of understanding reached between the two parties establishes a framework for negotiation of a long-term impact and benefit agreement for the future gold mine, Northgate said Wednesday.

The future agreement will provide terms on employment, training, business opportunities and other benefits for the Matachewan First Nation.

“Signing the memorandum of understanding with our First Nation partners is an important step towards this relationship as we move forward with the development and operation of the mine,” president and CEO Ken Stowe said in a release.

Matachewan Chief Elenore Hendrix said the agreement will “build upon an already sound relationship between our community and the company.”

“The signing of this historic memorandum of understanding brings the promise of hope and prosperity long awaited by our community and its membership.”

Earlier this month, Northgate announced it was writing off its $32 million investment in a copper and gold mine proposal near Smithers, B.C., after expansion plans were shelved by the federal and provincial governments following an environmental assessment.

Northgate wanted to expand its existing Kemess South operation to include a new open pit mine and modification of the existing ore processing facilities.

The company also has mining operations in Australia.
