Federal Funding Awarded to Participate in the Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Mine Project
OTTAWA – May 21, 2009
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded a total of $50,000 to three applicants to support their participation in the environmental assessment of the proposed Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Mine Project located between Fort St. James and Mackenzie, in north-central British Columbia.
The funding recipients are the Métis Nation British Columbia, the Nak’azdli Band and MiningWatch Canada.
This funding is being provided to assist the recipients to participate in the comprehensive study process and in the review of the comprehensive study report to be submitted by the responsible authorities, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
A Funding Review Committee (FRC), independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine all funding applications received for this project. All of the FRC’s recommendations are unanimous and are contained in its report. The report, along with further information on the project, is available in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 08-03-39778.
Terrane Metals Corporation proposes to develop a gold-copper mine at Mount Milligan that will process 60,000 tonnes per day of ore. The mining complex will consist of the mine pit, process plant, tailings impoundment area and dams, water intake and diversion systems, on-site mine haul roads, explosives factory and magazine facilities, and other associated mine buildings and infrastructure. The proposed development includes a 92-km transmission line and upgrade of the 29-km access road to the site.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
