I found a Shape file of all the past producing mines on a Government website. I’m sorry I can’t provide the link right now, but I loaded it into a GIS program and produced this map for around Kamloops.  I can produce other maps, but more importantly would this be something that should be made into a web application where people could highlight which past producing mines are abandoned, need work, etc.  Is this being done?  At the NOAMI conference I attened in October it seemed like it wasn’t being done. Needed funding?  I think the way to tackle this is through an OpenStreet Map/Wikipedia style approach.

Hi Neskie
For some reason I can’t open the .gif file. I’ll see if our webmaster can help. Otherwise I can offer a few replies:

1 - At the First Nations Mining Summit in Prince George, the First Nations Environmental Health Innovation Network released a map they produced ‘Past Producing Mines & Sites of Environmental Concern in BC 1852-2007’. It shows A LOT of closed and abandoned mine sites in BC. You can find this map under our Mining Resources Section, under Mining Maps. Looks like they used a different set of data from MinFile, through govt of BC.

2 - NOAMI has been working on a interactive map of all the closed, orphaned and abandoned mines across Canada. I saw a prototype a conference a couple years ago and it looked pretty good. I think they are still facing some hurdles in terms of data release issues so it hasn’t been released to the public yet. It can’t hurt to let NOAMI know that such a tool is wanted and needed. You can email them at . I think pushing them to publish their product is a cheaper strategy than trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s just annoying to wait and wait and wait.

3 - That being said, we could try to set up an interactive map on LandKeepers, beyond our major projects map on the home page, but it might take us a little head scratching to figure it out.

4 - Please feel free to share any maps you produce on this site. If you email them to me, I can post them in our resources section. Your product(s) could help demonstrate what other communities can produce, too.

Thanks!
Carrie
